Male Infertility

Up to 10% of men experience issues with fertility (the ability to induce conception). Male infertility has many causes, including

  • Age – older men have slightly reduced fertility
  • Diet – poor diet results in reduced fertility
  • Obesity
  • Stress
  • Smoking
  • Anabolic steroid use (HGH, Testosterone replacement, etc.)
  • History of radiation or certain types of chemotherapy
  • History of testicular cancer
  • Enviornmental exposure (hazardous chemicals)

Evaluation of male fertility often begins with a semen analysis.  If any abnormalities are found in the semen, then additional testing may be recommended. This can include hormone testing, genetic testing, and imaging of the testicles.

Treatment of male infertility can involve

  • Hormone treatment to encourage sperm production
  • Surgical repair of anatomic issues causing to infertility
  • Harvesting sperm directly from the testicle for assisted reproductive technology
