Hydrocele

Hydrocele refers to accumulation of fluid around the testicle. If the swelling is mild and not bothersome, then observation is usually recommended.  However, as the fluid continues to accumulate, a hydrocele can cause pain and/or discomfort in the scrotum. If this happens, your urologist may then recommend treatment of the hydrocele.

Percutaneous hydrocele drainage is a procedure performed in patients with a bothersome hydrocele.  During the procedure, a small needle is inserted into the fluid filled sac around the testicle and fluid is drained through the needle.  The procedure is performed in the office and can be done under local anesthesia. At Clarksville Urology we offer Nitrous Oxide as an additional form of anesthesia for those with procedure-related anxiety.

Hydrocelectomy is a procedure performed in patients with a bothersome hydrocele. It is performed under general anesthesia at either a surgery center or hospital. During the procedure, a small incision is made in the scrotum. The excess fluid surrounding the testicle (hydrocele) is removed and the excess tissue around the testicle (hydrocele sac) is removed to prevent recurrence. Most patients are able to go home the same day.
