Vasectomy

Vasectomy is one of the most common procedures performed in the United States.  500,000 vasectomies are performed in this country every year. Vasectomy is an in-office surgical procedure to render a man permanently infertile.

The vas deferens are small tubes that leave each testicle and deliver sperm into the urinary tract during ejaculation.  During a vasectomy, 1-2 small incisions are made in the scrotum, and through this, a segment of the vas deferens is removed. The inner portions of both tubes are burned shut and one end is buried in a different layer of tissue than the other end. The skin is then closed with a single self-dissolving suture.

The procedure generally takes 15 minutes or less and is done under local anesthesia. At Clarksville Urology we offer Nitrous Oxide as an additional form of anesthesia for those with procedure-related anxiety.

After the procedure, you’ll need to take it easy for 2-3 days.  You’ll need to avoid any sort of strenuous activity for at least one week after the procedure. It takes about 3 months before the results of a vasectomy are reliable, and during that time, couples should continue to use contraception.
