Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection involving any part of the urinary tract (kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra).  In adults, these occur most commonly in the bladder. More than 10% of adults

Symptoms of a urinary tract infection include

  • Burning with urination
  • Frequency of urination
  • Urgency of urination
  • Involuntary leakage of urine
  • Pain in the side/back
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever

A UTI is treated with antibiotics. Depending on the severity of the infection, this can be done with oral antibiotics at home or intravenous antibiotics in the hospital. Rarely a UTI can be related to obstruction of the urinary tract. UTI related to obstruction often requires placement of a surgical drain to remove the infected urine.
