Prostatitis

The prostate is a walnut-sized organ located immediately below the bladder. The prostate is composed of tightly packed glands that secret fluid that supports sperm during and after ejaculation. If any of these glands within the prostate become obstructed, then prostate fluid can accumulate and become inflamed/infected.  This is known as prostatitis.

Symptoms of prostatitis include

  • Pain with urination
  • Aching in the perineum (the space between the scrotum and anus)
  • Blood in the urine
  • Overactive bladder
  • An inability to urinate
  • Nausea/Vomiting
  • Fevers

Treatment for prostatitis can include

  • Antibiotics
  • Anti-inflammatories
  • Medication to relax the prostate
  • Placement of a foley catheter to drain the urinary tract
  • Rarely, surgery is needed if complications related to prostatitis occur
