Neurogenic Bladder

Neurogenic bladder is a condition in which the bladder does not function properly due to a problem with the nerves involved in bladder function. The bladder is an organ in the pelvis, which functions to store and empty urine.  Storage and emptying of urine is coordinated by the nervous system (brain, spinal cord, and nerves in the pelvis).  Damage to any part of the nervous system involved in bladder function can lead to a neurogenic bladder.

Common causes of neurogenic bladder include

  • Stroke
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Spina Bifida
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Pelvic Radiation
  • Diabetes
  • Complications of Pelvic Surgery

Symptoms of a neurogenic bladder include

  • Difficulty emptying the bladder
  • Bladder overactivity (frequent/urgent urination)
  • Urinary incontinence (involuntary urine leakage).

Patients with a neurogenic bladder are often recommended to see a urologist yearly to monitor bladder and kidney function.

Complications of neurogenic bladder include

  • Kidney stones
  • Hydronephrosis
  • Urinary Tract Infection
  • Kidney Failure
